Mike Sizemore, a 2nd career farmer in Stokes County, landed the Blue Ribbon for his supersized sweet potatoes three years running at the North Carolina State Fair. While surprised in the beginning, later he realized Stokes County could be a player with niche products in the sweet potato market. When he came across Stokes Purple Sweet Potatoes, with bright purple flesh, he decided to create a company to enable former tobacco farmers to earn a living while maintaining open space and providing anthocyanin rich purple fleshed sweet potatoes to the institutional and specialty foods markets.
